ECCA2025 Steps Out by Bringing Climate Art to the city of Rimini

Through satellite images, data and interactive storytelling, Our Ocean from Space, an exhibition curated by Fiorella Coliolo and Benoit Delplanque, will be installed within the framework of ECCA2025 in Piazzale Boscovich (Rimini) from June 16 to July 16, and will takes visitors on a journey above the oceans through images provided by Earth observation satellites, raising awareness on the main environmental issues affecting the ocean, engaging the public, key actors in space technology, decision-makers, students, young professionals and society.

In line with one of the five macro-themes of ECCA2025, protecting coastal and mountain areas, the exhibition, co-produced by UNESCO and the European Space Agency (ESA), with the support of Mercator Ocean, CMCC, ASI and Planetek Italia among others, explores current efforts to protect our precious marine ecosystems and offers a unique opportunity to understand, from a space-based perspective, the dynamics affecting them, from climate change to the impact of human activities.

The augmented reality modules which compose the exhibition provide access to expert analyses and testimonies from inhabitants of coastal areas, addressing major scientific topics related to the marine environment: ocean warming, sea level rise, the impact of salinity and ocean currents, and the consequences of climate change on coral reefs and biodiversity. During the exhibition, visitors will discover how Earth observation satellites monitor the way gravity influences ocean dynamics, maritime traffic, and marine protected areas.

With its breathtaking images and video-interviews, the exhibition showcases concrete examples of how innovation can help ecological transition while encouraging people to better understand the ocean, change their practices, and develop sustainable approaches. This traveling exhibition has been organized in collaboration with Rimini Blue Lab, a social and cultural innovation lab of the Municipality of Rimini, co-funded by European resources (ESF+ Emilia-Romagna Regional Programme 2021-2027) which focuses on the green and blue soul of the city of Rimini. Rimini Blue Lab promotes, spreads, and supports knowledge and culture of the sea (ocean literacy), the sustainable use of its resources, and a respectful and conscious lifestyle. It also engages in dialogue and co-design activities and marine citizen science projects with young people, schools, and associations to help protect and preserve the natural heritage and well-being of the coastal city and the sustainable development of its blue economy.
